The Nuts And Bolts Of Right Hand Drive Conversion Chevrolet

By Richard Lewis

If you are so used to driving on the left side of the car, making the switch to the obverse side can be difficult and just plain inconceivable. Nonetheless, it is a way of life for those who have had to make the change. Maybe even you would have to make a right hand drive conversion chevrolet.

In the little microcosm of our own respective countries, it can be hard to imagine that other places have their own different ways of doing things. Right hand traffic is more common. However, nearly eighty states in the world, a clean thirty five percent, use the alternative LHT. That includes the United Kingdom, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Thats good enough for facts and figures, you say. Youre all for the status quo and cant be made to mind minority practices. However, just because you live on the right rule of the road doesnt mean that the change will not impinge on you.

For instance, imagine that circumstances will lead you to live in another country, either temporarily or permanently. Not just in another country, however, but one that uses LHT. And then youll have to drive your own self around. That spells out spatial disorientation bonanza to you.

In changing orientations, you are in a tussle not just with your hardwired habits and brain, but with the car itself. After all, it is not just as easy as plucking off the steering wheel from the left and affixing it on the right. Steering conversion requires a complete overhaul on the whole driving system of your vehicle.

The process of conversion takes up to two weeks minimum. You also have to focus on the aesthetics of the car, but most of all on its functionality. You must watch out for certain issues and problems that can arise and get out of control such as fatigue failure, reduced component strength and primary safety, et cetera.

The interior of your vehicle is thoroughly stripped and gutted. The consoles, dashboard, the seats, and the carpeting are cleared away. Every little, niggling tool and equipment, from the headlamps, air conditioning ducts, door switches, mirrors, and the windscreen wipers are repositioned and readjusted. This attention to the physical layout is important since the goal is to produce the original cars inverted or mirror image.

There are general guidelines put forward by service providers. First off, original and unmodified components should be used as much as possible. The specific designations of the manufacturer, all the geometry and measurements of positions and locations, must be replicated. If there has to be additional parts added, they have to be as simple and conservative when possible. Heating, welding, bending, and other destructive testing methods should be minimized or done away altogether. After everything, the mandatory documentation will have to be compiled. That is, the technician should list all the components that were changed, plus all the needed information, like the comparisons in dimension, orientation, fit and function of the original and replaced components.

Conversions to the right hand drive must meet certain standards and regulations. The outcome will essentially be refurbished, so it will put the car owners mind at rest if it was as close and distinguishable as the original make. Street legality aside, the premium consideration here is on safety and reliability.
