5 Small Dog Breeds For Prospective Owners

By Jim Silverstein

Contrary to what you may have heard, you don't need a big space to own a canine. There are many small dog breeds that can thrive in apartments. They also happen to be cheaper to take care of and often require less exercise than bigger pooches. Here are five which always stand out.

Small fluffy dog breeds are always popular and the Lhasa Apso is one of them. You won't have to worry about vacuuming up dog hair when owning one since they don't shed. And different from many of the littler pet types they are very alert watchdogs. However you shouldn't expect them to be able to stop an intruder just alert you to their presence.

A gorgeous black and white coat is the hallmark of the Boston terrier. This breed is not only attractive but makes an excellent family pet and therefore is always near the top of any small dog breeds list. Even though they may have a face that resembles that of a bulldog they only typically weigh about twenty five pounds at the most.

Without a doubt one of the best small dog breeds for active owners is the Jack Russell terrier. These dogs have a ton of energy so you will need to exercise them daily. They also tend to live for quite a long time which is of course a big benefit since you will have a many years to enjoy together.

Most of us can instantly recognize the dachshund with their long bodies but extra short legs. It is this body type that is many times compared to that of a hot dog. However it was purposely bred to be this way so that it could enter the underground burrows of animals when hunting.

There are a large number of dog fanciers who simply adore the bull terrier. However it is sometimes too big and a little too much dog to handle for some of them. If this sounds like you, the miniature bull terrier might be a good fit. Although it is recommended that you have experience if you want this breed since they can be very stubborn.

Each of these small dog breeds offers something a little different. So be sure to take the time you need to decide what you are looking for in a pet before you make any decisions. And of course there are many more to pick from, these are just the beginning!
