JEDDAH: Hanood Abdulaziz Al-Harbi was threatened because his wife Salma Hazzab Al-Otaibi ran in the recently concluded municipal council elections.
He didn’t listen to these threats and pressure tactics and his wife Salma won her seat on the municipal council as the only winner from the Madrakah center of Jamjoum in the Makkah region, he told an online newspaper.
He said that he was contacted by many people demanding that he prevent his wife from running in the elections. “I did not listen to them and my wife won the elections from her center. Not only this, she is representing the women of Makkah.”
Al-Harbi said that he was happy with the decision of his wife to run in the elections. “She is associated with a school and has a bachelor’s degree in education. She is capable enough to serve her family and her region. This is why I supported and stood by her side.”
Al-Harbi does independent work since his retirement. He has not had peace since his wife’s name appeared as a candidate for the elections.
“They demanded that I withdraw her name voluntarily. Then I explained the issue and told them that I was behind the decision. As long as she does not go against Shariah, the law and the system, I have no problem with her decision. So they once threatened me. Her signboard, which we had just put up a few hours earlier, disappeared. But we didn’t look back. I decided to support her till the end as she was on the right path as was determined by the rule of the law,” he said.
She received 68 more votes than her nearest rival with a margin of 20 votes. Heads of tribes, dignitaries and officials were still calling him from within and outside the center to congratulate him on the victory of his wife.
