By Betty Reynolds

A great joy and challenge to have in your life is to own and look after a pet. Many have taken to enjoy animal companionship over human companionship and they seem to enjoy it more too. Some of your friends may have insisted you try the former by buying a Frenchie dog. But before you do take this step, it may be good to finish reading this article first for some much needed information before buying from an Ohio breeder.

The frenchie is another name for the French bulldog, is considered as the sixth most popular dog according to the American Kennel Club. It is part of the mastiff line used in ancient times for the blood sport of bull baiting. It was widely dispersed in the European sub continent by Phoenician traders. When the sport was outlawed, the unemployed bulldogs became pets and household companions.

The breed has a smart, playful and adaptable personality. It however craves a lot of attention from its owner and will make a ululating sound when it is disappointed in the attention department. Owners of this dog call this sound the French death yodel. Also new owners of this breed will find that the females of the species are very protective of their young and those they care about.

Energy wise, this dog is rated as medium in terms of scale against other dogs its size. Surprisingly it is well adapted to small spaces and it does quite well in small residential settings such as apartments and condominiums. They should at least be let out for walks for 30 minutes per day if they are fairly inactive for the better part of the day.

It is a dog that is similar to the English bulldog except that it is smaller and has erect ears. It has a more compact body with a wider girth and smaller legs. It however, lacks the aggressive alpha nature of its English cousin and can be left alone with other small animals and small children.

The breed will also have some health complications too. Its compact airway plus its snub nose make it quite difficult for this breed to regulate body temperature. Coupled with its very thin coat of fur, it is not well suited for very cold or very hot climates. Thus if one lives in a country with these kind of climates, it will be ill advised to get this kind of dog as a pet, as they will most surely not make it.

The average lifespan of this dog is quite short at around eight to ten years. This is quite short for a breed of this size. However with proper nutrition and health care, one can extend the lifespan of this breed a bit more.

Thus this article has covered some basic information regarding the French bulldog, which you should know prior to your. It will always be imperative that you do find out everything about your prospective pet before jumping in feet first. It takes a lot of commitment and responsibility in taking care of a pet as a friend and as a companion in the home.
