How The Use Of Math Flashcards Can Improve Performance

By Betty Murray

As much as someone may look at them as simple toy-looking gadgets, they have great value in the learning and teaching process. After being used and proved to be a good technique, it has gained popularity all over the world. It motivates learners making them more interested. It is therefore used to help some learners who believed mathematics is tough to change their attitude. Math flashcards have not only improved attitude but also the performance in the subject.

After it is introduced to a certain group of learners, not all of them might adapt faster to it. Other might show signs of no interest, but obviously, the majority will embrace it due to its irresistible nature. It is the duty of the teacher to make almost all of them have a liking for the teaching technique. This should be a gradual process, and as the others continue learning by it, the teacher should continue guiding and encouraging those who are slow to adapt.

Some learners are good on their own without necessarily involving the flashcards. Math has diverse methods of dealing with it which might seem simpler to others than they are to another group. But generally, any teacher knows that the introduction of the method could help many embrace the subject.

This is an interactive method, and at large it could involve both children and adult learners. It improves on the retention ability of information by the learners. Most stakeholders find this method of teaching very effective. The students grasp math techniques fast, direct and less strenuous. Their colorful nature makes them attractive, and learners remember the technique in association to the colors.

Other learners are simply attracted to the way the flashing is done. They keep alert and tend to concentrate, thus increasing their probability of grasping lots of information. The method has a lot of repetition, and this enhances the memory of the learners making them gain lots of knowledge.

The flashcards are easy to make. They are made from cheap materials most of which are locally available. Some materials for purchase is solely depended on the number of cards that are needed. Therefore the cards can be made as many as possible enough to cover almost most of the concepts the teacher might need to teach. The cards are highly versatile, meaning they can be used for other subjects too other than mathematics.

Since the cards are easy to make, the teacher can involve learners in the process. Those who might not have liked the method will start developing an interest. It involves the use of crayons, paper boards, color markers, and a cutting device preferably a pair of scissors. And as a teacher, you can plan to come up with a design that will be interesting to the students, meaning they will love it. Gradually they will find themselves developing a great liking for the method, and they will associate it with the learning of mathematics. The cost of making them is relatively low, and this means it is affordable to make, manipulate and manage them.

They can be used for a variety of teaching options. They are suitable for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They even have fraction sets. This means teaching a variety of math concepts is possible.
