A Guide To Finding UMN Housing Off Campus

By Matthew Martin

Students can feel excited after they enroll into the University of Minnesota. However, they may face some challenges, particularly with accommodation. Some people do not like to reside in a dorm while others do not like to commute to and from college. Students who want to reside outside the college can choose one of the many UMN housing off campus options available.

One of the popular housing options is apartments. There are many apartment complexes within a few blocks of the University of Minnesota. These apartments are designed to make it easier for students to get to class while still enjoying the privacy that dorm rooms do not offer. Most of these apartments have one bedroom, but some have two bedrooms. Therefore, if you desire to live with a roommate, you can choose to share a two bedroom apartment.

The apartments which are situated close to the university are mainly inhabited by students. Their rents are more cost effective. The leasing terms of these apartments also go in line with the school year. Many of these apartments are furnished to save the students the hassle and tussle of moving appliances and furniture when relocating. However, they must use the items in the apartments properly so that they will not be damaged in any way during their stay.

The other off campus accommodation option available is condominiums. In general, condominiums are larger than apartments and can therefore be easily shared by a few people. Although the rental charges are higher than those of apartments, it is cost effective to share a condo. The lease terms of condos situated close to universities also tend to complement the school year. If they choose a condo that is near their school, students can easily walk or ride a bicycle to get to class.

Single family homes are also suitable for students. You can choose to stay in a single family home with a few roommates. A three bedroom house may be the best for it will provide you with more privacy. However, the cost of utilities such as electricity, water and garbage disposal fee could be higher. Many family homes are not situated near universities. Therefore, you will need a reliable means of transport.

When looking for a place to live off campus, it is important to check the fine print of the lease. Find out what penalties you will pay if you break it. You should also consider which kind of restrictions are in place and what is allowed. For instance, you may like hanging up art, but there may be a strict policy of no nails or adhesives on the walls. In this case, you have to plan for professional installation of rails.

When searching for housing, it is advisable to drive or walk around that particular area or search for the managers online. If multiple property management firms manage the properties, you will be able to contact them individually or together to accelerate your search. You must also consider your wants such like non smoking.

You should also be ready to make a deposit after you find a suitable property. If a landlord sees that you are ready to make a deposit, he or she will be more likely to process your application fast. Living off campus is a great way to prepare yourself to live on your own after college.
